Acutec has installed its dual C-Band VSAT Solution on Australia's Marine National Facility research vessel Investigator. The C-Band VSAT Solution will provide broadband VSAT communications to the state-of-the-art ship based in Hobart for its research work in the seas and oceans around Australia.

The requirements called for a system that could maintain high availability and serviceability, even in the elevated sea states and low ambient temperatures found at low latitudes. As well as carrying all the day to day communications of the ship, the system has been specified to support occasional very high bandwidth data for up-linking live video when required.

The solution incorporates dual Sea Tel C-Band VSATs and the Acutec Dual Antenna Switch. These work to remove the effect of blockage from the scientific equipment on the main mast, ensuring uninterrupted communications.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia's national science agency, and one of the largest and most diverse agencies in the world. The new vessel is being designed, built and commissioned by CSIRO through the Future Research Vessel Project, an initiative of the Australian Government under the Super Science Initiative and financed from the Education Investment Fund.
