Australian Navy To Upgrade MWV Satcoms
Acutec has been tasked with developing the set to work and Harbour and Sea Acceptance Test procedure (HAT and SAT) for the RAN's communications upgrade program for Minor War Vessels (MWVs).
The Strategic Communications Modernisation Program (SCMP) will see Fleet Broadband and Telstra Next G services rolled out to some 40 smaller patrol boats, mine hunters and other small ships and boats throughout the fleet starting with HMAS TOBRUK.
When in range of a mobile telephone tower, data and voice is routed via the Telstra Next G network, dramatically reducing satellite usage costs for the fleet. More than a few miles offshore, the Thrane & Thrane Sailor 500 Fleet Broadband terminals take over. These replace existing Nera Saturn B equipment and provide up to 5 times more bandwidth.
The design also caters for future installation of a WGS-certified X-band marine satellite terminal when these become commercially available, providing vessels with a fully redundant high bandwidth 3 bearer communications system.
